Erich really is someone special. A man of his talent and skills took the stage this episode. He's also observant as ever. With this war still brewing, they're trying to build towards its end rather than escalating it further. But yeah, this was far harder said than done.

What a fantastic episode, and an incredible season overall. Let’s see how it ends, because I’m close to giving it a 10/10. The folly of the empire is on full display here. While technically it never took the first action on any of the fronts of this war, it smelled blood and gleefully bathed in it. The Entente Alliance may have crossed the border, but invading the entire country is like shooting someone for spitting on you. Similar with the Federation, though at least those guys fired the first shots, and the empire didn’t manage to take as much territory. There is no such thing as “the blow that will convince them to back down”. Every death, every bit of territory lost, makes those countries angrier and less willing to forgive. The time to back out on good conditions passed the moment the empire crossed its own borders. Like Rudersdorf says, the conditions keep getting worse and they will continue to do so, always to an extent the empire won’t accept. It will fight itself to death and ensure that everything conceivable is lost for nothing gained. And Tanya herself, as badly as she cries for peace now, was always right there at the front lines, gladly, if not quite willingly, demonstrating the empire’s power and slaughtering its neighbours.

Tanya should probably just defect already. I wonder how the conditions changed so drastically so quickly? IIRC they were more lenient before. Giving back the Entente territory in itself should be seen as a huge concession, since they clearly lost. I guess the rest of the world is in the same spot the empire was a short time ago, too stubborn to stop fighting without gaining anything, only to lose more in the process. So the empire will have to drive up the cost for them to continue fighting. They should probably use their mage squads to hunt allied kingdom ships. I think they would be quite effective at it. I hope S3 comes immediately, because this whole seasons just feels like setup without any payoff so far.

What did the Empire expect in their delusions of grandeur? As much as we root for Rerugen, even his loyalty has blinded him from all the guns pointing at their state. And though Conrad appearing late is a refreshing appearance, it is indeed too late for them. Even with all of this being in mind, this episode also told us...."we should conquer Ildoa, ne?" Tanya will soon smell a whole lot of magic-infused gunpowder and high-altitude war aroma in the coming episodes.

Obviously, the Empire should have taken the first peace deal. Now they're stretched too thin, jobbing all over the place, and feeling the heat, so clearly the solution is to start yet another unwinnable fight. As the war drags on, the terms will continue to worsen. I can only imagine what it will look like to the outside when they turn their guns on the ones handling the negotiations. Looks like Weimar is right around the corner.

Jeez that reality check to Rerugen with the "Are you saying you're not offering reparations" was so brutal. After finally realising they need to end the war, it turns out they don't even have the ability to anyway. I love how realistic this show is with the diplomacy aspect and the mindset behind peace treaties and ceasefires during this time. After WW1 there was bitter international debate and so much propaganda going around from every belligerent country about who really started the war and who actually bore the "war guilt", but the reality is here as we see here that no matter what, the narrative that the public will have to swallow will always be dictated by the stronger/victorious powers in the end. I like how Calandro put emphasis on the fear of the empire too, it definitely reflects the French sentiment during talks of peace in WW1 too - how terrified they were of Germany's rapidly growing industrial and military capacity and how desperate they were to put a cap on it with demilitarisation. This has been a great series so far, I'll have to pick up the light novels when the season ends.

The continuation of last episode's pursuit of peace. At long last, after some hard truths and a logical wake-up call, the military high-ranking officers have realised that, at the state they're going to, the war will not conclude, and they must cut their losses or fear losing more the longer the war rages on. That said, they know they have to end the war on their terms, because nobody sane and rational would say that the Empire has the might to take on the entire world and win; that'd be foolish optimism. Yet they must at least show the world that they don't back down so easily. And they did. General Romel might have failed, but General Zettour, the GOAT himself, succeeded in showing that the Empire can still bite hard. That's all fine and dandy; all they need to do is forward this peace agreement to Ildoa as the neutral party that would handle negotiations. But that's the interesting part... Colonel Erich was one of the most pragmatic and level-headed individuals in the series; he possesses the aptitude and ability to see that the Empire will lose the war at its current pace and is quite outspoken about their need to sign a peace treaty, but even HE did not realise how skewed his perception of the war was. He is, after all... An imperial Soldier. What the Empire see as cutting their losses by not attaining a supreme glorious victory, the other nations would see as a flagrant provocation that desecrates the meaning of a peace treaty, and it makes sense. I mean... The Empire basically said that they will NOT pay for all damages, NO reimbursement to the thousands that they killed, and they will NOT return the territories that they conquered and occupied, yet they are willing to be given reparations as though they're the victim. As long as the Empire stood tall with its military might, the whole continent would fear them. The World would forget the border violation incident, but the World will remember that the one who declared war and shot first was the Empire.

“What will the world do to the empire” I think this the first time I’ve ever seen Rerugen and Rudersdorf look kinda dumb because surely they didn’t think the empire would be able to end this war where they’re fighting the entire world without some sort of financial and territorial concessions? Regardless of who started the war, the victors make the terms and they’re obviously going to use this as a pretense to seize historically disputed territories.. that’s just the cost for losing a war. Maintaining control of your country and even still having a country is the reward. I’m seeing a lot of people falling into the classic sunk cost fallacy in this series. That’s to say that just because you’ve spent a lot of money, resources and manpower fighting this war doesn’t mean you have to continue doing it when it’s clearly not winnable. You don’t give up everything because you’ve spent something, but even the generals now seem to be believing that, to a lesser degree than the general staff and politicians, but realistically their best hope here is an end to the war with all of them alive and having a country to call home.

Loved the reparations conversation. Even Rerugen, who is more clued into the reality of the war than seemingly 90% of the chain of command, wasn't aware of the true reality of how the war is being perceived by the rest of the world. The Empire is flailing in the present whilst the victors are already writing history.

@Comander-07 Optics of the empire is what has changed. The previous conditions were accepted after the empire just woke up one day and said, you know what, I'm gonna steamroll the ruskies. And off they were. They seemed like an unstoppable force, so accepting peace there was in the opposing sides best interest. But now? The current optics are that the empire is a cornered animal fighting for it's last breath. The eastern front is in shambles, Tanya's last battle there already displayed the dire situation, and vocal reports in these last episodes implies that things aren't exactly getting better there. In the south, the attack against Hood was successful, but look at it for what it was, the cover of the empire running away from one of the theaters. Also, the italian guy has a point, when someone is clearly as strong as the empire is, the weaklings won't be at ease just by it being passive, and will look at how to remove it from their surroundings. Not to mention that the italian guy itself is probably poisoning the talks.

The Empire are now starting to pay the price for their stubborn pride and greed during this war. I do feel bad for Rerugen for having his arguments being ripped apart so easily the way it did, but he needed to have that dose of reality that his conditions for getting the other countries to that negotiation table would be seen as provocation instead. Everyone else important has played their part here to this situation that the Empire finds itself in. While he's no saint in the way he's handled things, at least Rudersdorf does understand that the longer the other generals dither in what to do next, their hand on negotiating a ceasefire and a way to end the war becomes weaker and weaker. With the way things are going, it looks like this endless war will continue until there's nothing left of the Empire. Poor Tanya is going to have to put up with more fighting, I'm guessing. The multiple appearances on the Nutcracker in this episode does give that ominous feeling that things aren't going to end on a rosy note with two episodes left on this series.

| Forever war it is then lol... Or until Tanya dies or runs away and the whole Empire falls in the meantime... U cannot 1 v 10 this fucking war my dudes running this shithole of a country, and the "pride" of the Empire is too important for them to have the rest of the world eat away at the Empire's territories and economy if diplomacy was to continue... Shit is literally fuckt, just go and win more battles and hope that they invent the equivalent to magical nukes before the americans do at this point... 9/10, and actually fighting a loosing war, is sad, but fascinating to see what other demented plans are they going to give Tanya and her suicide squad next! | @CorbanEsp The issue with that narrative is that at the point the peace proposal came in, they already ran out of steam. From my POV not that much time has even passed. I guess asking for peace now at all shows how desperate they are. I guess they like the chance to hugbox the empire to death, but that also goes against the "the empire is too weak to continue fighting" narrative. Because it cant be both at the same time. | Yeah, there's no way that the Empire could accept paying reparations, not when the whole thing kicked off by them getting invaded, then someone else using 'coming to the defense of an ally' as a pretext to try and snatch some land, then others seeing the Empire's military might as a threat and jumping in to whittle it down, then the snowball just growing from there. | That was the case I believed it would be, that is the mentality of the weak toward the strong. There are many, but too few of the strong. They would rather destroy them while they have the chance, who would know if they'd get stronger in the future and strike again. Next episode is gonna be a big one. | The realities of war. The hardest part of a two week war is the first ten years. And now that monster will learn that she's not getting out from Being X's manipulations If after getting such sincere feedback, they still attack Ildoa, then they really deserve to be dismantled completely. The first step in negotiations is always to understand the other party's viewpoints. This episode hits so close to what is happening currently with Russia vs Ukraine. In our real world, the usual solutions are 1. demilitarized zone or 2. new technology that obliterates the other so hard they cry for peace. |

@Comander-07 No, if you remember, they were offered the same conditions as they themselves offered now (more or less) because the other countries thought they were weakened enough to accept. The answer for that was a massive show of force that sent the signal of "what are you talking about, we were just being careful". Combined with the master move of giving the occupied regions self-determination rights made them get a lot of public support outside the empire. All of this made the negotiations turn from a bleak offer to an actual good offer for the empire. But then, politicians (always politicians ruining things no matter reality or fiction) refuses it, and instead asked for the impossible. The next Empire attack was a failure, yeah they survived, but they failed to make a dent or get any valuable position out of it, this showed the world that the previous display of force was not the actual truth, but them going all out and now were on fumes. Combined with refusing the peace proposal, now they are frowned upon. A second proposal was always going to be their downfall. And yes, the narrative can be both at the same time, you can see it just by looking at current events. The empire is too weak to fight right now, we should finish it since, were they be able to recover and rebuild their forces, they will come again, stronger and more aggressive. Your POV can be what it is, but it has been almost a year since the start of the season, this chapter alone covers almost a full month. But that's something common in anime, most people don't really get how much time passes because it's all over the place depending on the show.

@CorbanEsp My POV is what it is because the anime doesn't give a good sense of time progression. If a substantial amount of time had passed then sure the shift would make sense, but it didnt seem like it. Going from the snowy eastern front to africa and italy did not seem like much time had passed, just that the scenery changed. Because IF it had been such a long time since Tanya returned from the eastern front, then I have to wonder why the federation didnt manage to push the Empire back more. So far this whole season doesn't really have a payoff to anything.

@Comander-07 Because Zettour is an actual beast on the field? It got explained before Tanya left the eastern front, they fear him way more than her. I'm one that completely agrees with the "if the information is on supplementary content, it is the directors fault and a hole in the story) but here all the pieces are in place. The season starts in autumn, as Tanya herself says "winter is approaching fast". This episode is shown to take place through august (25th of July at the start of the chapter, 23rd of August the Ildoa negotiation, no further knowledge about the exact moment the letters are given, but give it easily another week). In this case is not even a "sense of progression", the progression is the real progression and the anime is giving to those that can't grasp the concept of "traveling takes time" a written sign saying the exact date something is taking place. I can agree with the season not having "payoff" since the payoff I guess is some big battle, this is clearly a setup for invading Ildoa, that clearly will be in a hypothetical third season. But if I wanted only action between a MC with plot armor because MC and a literal Mary Sue, I'd rewatch the movie, it delivers spectacularly on that regard.

Not the first time that a discord between the military and the leadership prolongs a war. An exit strategy at this point would be the ideal scenario. For a politician Konrad seems to be a decent one. The basis of diplomacy is that you offer the other party something that would sate their desire for wanting to continue the war. They really should had come up with a better offer.

Unless Empire pulls out some wild (nuclear) card, they're doomed. Invasion of not-Italy would be the dumbest thing to do. Not-US hasn't officially joined the war but something's telling me they'll do it if Empire invades not-Italy. Not Empire has 2 choices. Stage a coup and accept bad conditions, or fight with honor to the moment your capitol is razed to the ground. Now I don't know what happens in source material, but the way things go, this show can end very soon (maybe just 1 more season?). I mean, it'll be defeat after defeat from now on. Just like Napoleon, Tanya can't win all the battles. War is lost. Unless, again, nukes are introduced and Empire uses them. That would certainly change things.

not to get political, but thats basically the state of Russia rn, a stalemate that already drained too many resources to back down without dealing a huge blow to the nation's pride. An existing exit trought diplomatic efforts but not one that would satisfy the perpetrator, at the same time, tho weakened, tho unable to win against every army in the world combined, still has enough fuel in the tank to hit everything around it... in a futile act of resistance, meaningless bloodshed for prolonged attrition without a pleasing "win" in sight, but still an act of resistance powerful enough to shake the world.

The most realest line of the series. The general mass fears the strong and wants it destroyed. The empire now has their back against the wall. They are gonna go out with a bang. Rerugen trying to drink from an empty cup shows the severity of the situation.

@CorbanEsp My issue with the lack of payoff is still tied to the narrative of the frontlines. If they don't have the troops to push on the eastern front, then invading Ildoa wont help. They said so themselves. All they can hope for is a surprise attack and even that would only take half the country. If we are to believe the Empire is already on the backfoot here, then the Ildoa invasion would just make that worse. I dont really see how that makes for an interesting third season. I was hoping we would see some point of success for the Empire, in afric against the entente, maybe a strike on the allied kingdom to cripple their fleet. Anything. Because we all know the unified states will join at some point if this is following history and then its over. But its all retreats or failed offensives. Yet at the same time we dont actually see their own frontline collapse. Its just a state of whatever the plot needs right now, it doesnt feel earned. Same issue with the "travel takes time" concept. How much time does it actually take? Because Tanya and her squad have been shipped around quite a bit. I just dont see a big difference between the time the first peace offer came in and now. If this started in autumn (or did you mean spring?) then for now to be august almost an entire year would need to have passed.
