MAL's rules are pretty messy. They often feel too arbitrary and inconsistent, and they end up removing important historical records. I remember when they removed the next Akira project from the database, then later reversed the decision and added it back. There was even a discussion about it on this forum:

I think MAL should keep records of cancelled anime like AniList does, here: https://anilist.co/search/anime?airing%20status=CANCELLED
