I can't give any example regarding Hyouka since Hyouka itself is the example. And the statement you just quoted was basically the entire appeal of Hyouka.

It's not supposed to be some kind of superficial performative self-gratifying narration. In fact, most of the readers and viewers would never compare themselves to Oreki (MC) since he literally thinks things through differently and in the light novel, his inner monologues serves as a glimpse for us to see how he would react to the obstacles being thrown at him.

At some point, I won't deny that Hyouka is not exactly unique and may have some inspirations from certain works, but that's just how literary art pieces work. The difference maker is whether you put your own flavor into it while contributing something new to the genre and I'd certainly say (like many people) that the series did just that. It's a captivating and descriptive story that shines in the whole concept of contrasting elements. For me personally, the later volumes (regarding the new freshman member) of the title is a little bit less relevant compared to its peak of previous volumes and chapters.

To end it on a good note, I just feel like this is an "agree to disagree" kind of conversation where your preferences massively dictate what's a green flag and a red flag, but I'm still just curious as to what the bottleneck is for common ground to work so don't take my replies with hostility.

I've reviewed both Hyouka (manga) and Fire Punch so I feel like I have an enough fair take of the two; you can view it if you want. And no, I don't dislike Fire Punch because of its bold controversial elements. Like you've said about Hyouka, Fire Punch just fails to deliver it in writing and tries so hard to be this avant-garde mess in concept. The visuals don't help since it feels inked through most of the time but it's for another conversation.

As for your reasoning, It's nice that you clarified it. It's understandable but I still feel like you're missing the point of the literary read. It's not supposed to focus on the events, the events are mostly dull, trivial, and superficial and it's meant to be that way. The point of the read is to highlight the contrast of it all complemented by the MC (Oreki) seeing things in a new light as he passes through these so-called boring mysteries contradicting his initial statements of boredom. The depth itself isn't at the events or the characters, it's how the characters tackle it.

What I get though is that the nonchalant execution of how the events unfold tends to be more geared towards the readers' self-gratification. But again, that doesn't mean that the writing quality is lost. Some works that have those same qualities tend to be lost in terms of consistency and cohesiveness, and Hyouka is neither of that. The nuance is lost on you if you think that's "shallow".

What it suffers from though is that it may never be finished, and it wouldn't be surprising to see to derail from the qualities I've mentioned prior.

AeroLMS Sep 10, 1:32 AM
Well that's the thing. Hyouka is in a simple setting that doesn't overcomplicate itself so being shallow would be less prominent compared to BBT where the gimmick or concept itself is about being a nerd and a scientific person which would be easier to slip up.

And I feel like you're just negatively biased against it due to the fans and the wannabe enjoyers of it. I've seen what kind of people you're talking about and it does leave a bitter aftertaste to the series.

As for the other novels you've mentioned, does that even make Hyouka a full-on carbon copy of them? That's like saying modern sitcoms are ripoffs of older classics and that they have nothing to put on the table just because there's some semblance or similarities based on inspiration.

Again, I fail to see the lack of good writing in Hyouka that you try to perceive it to be. Seeing as you enjoyed Fire Punch that's worse in writing (and visuals), I'm literally lost here on how you think the Hyouka LN managed to be rated lower unless you just admit that it's all just subjective rhetoric.
AeroLMS Sep 10, 1:13 AM
Well first off, weren't the mysteries in the Hyouka LN tackled with logically sound sequences? The whole "superficial problems in a dull setting becoming interesting" quirk was the main point of the whole read so I find it weird that you find it unoriginal and uninspired (based on your review) and I doubt you'd see carbon copies of this so called trope that's older than it. Especially given that the setting is from a highschooler's perspective specifically, it would be much more ridiculous to see mysteries that are Detective Conan-levels of intensity or other Shonen-esque gimmicks.

Another thing is the "high school self-insert" part. Most slice of life reads include younger people so by definition, 60 to 70% of the animanga medium are highschool self-inserts. Like I said, compared to what you perceived the TikTok sigma performative bullshit to be, Hyouka didn't have that kind of vibe unless you specifically wanted to give attention to the LARPers of Hyouka that put Oreki as their profile picture because he's "mysterious" and "stoic".

And every beginner-friendly story at some point was meant to inspire viewers to insert themselves into them, the main difference is how they've been written and what the intent behind all of it is by the author. Some shows are indeed stupidly superficial with an incohesive concept and plot, and I don't see that in Hyouka and in fact, the prose of it is beautifully written.

I'm specifically talking about the rehashes or the extended releases of Evangelion which should at least be one point lower given that it's technically not original and didn't add anything vital.

As for Fire Punch, it's in no way shape and form intellectually nuanced compared to the Hyouka light novel you called "unoriginal" and "performative" which fits the former well.

You might have some pretty good takes and tastes especially with how stacked your account is, but I'm just specifically hyperfocusing on the one thing I saw from you 5 years ago.

Also, props to you for replying immediately.
AeroLMS Sep 10, 12:42 AM
Your Hyouka light novel review was downright just an elitistic take, then I see you rating rehashes of Evangelion (biased) and Fire Punch (shock factor salad + messy artstyle) a 10.

Not here to argue though. We all have shit opinions in the end of the day.

Hi! No one seems to be adding relations to the Live Action in Anime club anymore. I've had requests for addition from last year and 2024 that have yet to be added. Not sure if requests by other users from years prior have even been added to the club's relations sidebar as the last comment by the other officer, landblade, regarding club updates was on Aug 31, 2020 2:51 PM. Hoping the requests on the club's comments section after lanblade's last update could be looked into and the relations sidebar could be updated. Thank you.
