World Is Dancing

One does not need dance to live.

In 1374, during the turbulent age when the Northern and Southern Courts were locked in conflict, the Northern Court's shogun, Ashikaga Yoshimitsu, was becoming an increasingly dominant force.

Born the son of Kanami, head of the Kanze troupe of sarugaku performers, Oniyasha drifts through his days with a hazy question lodged in his heart: Why do people dance? His spirit remains clouded, until the day he encounters a dance that is truly "good."

Curious, sensitive, and strikingly beautiful, the boy meets people, laughs, cries, confronts his own weaknesses, and slowly begins to shape a new form of dance for a world steeped in impermanence.

Preliminary (3/13 eps)

Oniyasha is the son of the main dancer in a nomad dance group during 14th century in Japan. As was expected, he is destined to inherit his father's role and continue the legacy. The problem is that Oniyasha never understood the art of dancing. Dancing feels pointless, asking himself...

Why do people dance?


What makes the story interesting is watching how his perspective change. As the anime progresses, he discovers that dance is not just a single art form but a vast range of expressions, emotions, and ways of telling stories through movement. At the same time, he has to deal with the resentment of other members ... of the dance group who believe his privileged position as the famous dancer's son has made his path much easier than theirs.

· The animation is beautiful, especially during the dance sequences (i loved the lasts minutes of the first episode. It was AMAZING).
· It has comedy, drama, history, and Japanese culture.
· The series has a subtle mystical element through Inouo (i had to search his name lol), a mysterious character that helps Oniyasha.

· The anime sometimes dives too deeply into technical explanations and historical Japanese periods, which can be confusing if you're not already familiar with them (i'm not).
· There are quite a few characters introduced, yet some of them receive very little development. It's frustrating since these kinds of anime often end after a season.


As for Oniyasha himself, he's probably the most divisive part of the show. Sometimes he's incredibly relatable, and it's easy to understand his doubts, frustrations, and search for identity. Other times, he comes across as a spoiled kid who has always had opportunities handed to him.

To be honest, I'm usually not a big fan of this type of anime, but the cover caught my attention, and I've been enjoying the story more than I expected. Because of that, I'd definitely recommend giving it a chance (at least the first episodie!!!)

Mixed Feelings

Preliminary (6/13 eps)

Even though World Is Dancing looks pretty approachable, it’s super artsy and you really have to pay attention while watching it. Some scenes are straight up trippy, like something out of an arthouse movie.

If you aren't already into traditional Japanese performing arts, you might get bored pretty fast. Unlike other shows that throw in fun side plots so you don't need to know the culture to enjoy them, this one expects you to keep up. I actually had to Google stuff a bunch of times just to figure out what was going on in certain scenes. It doesn't really hold your hand, so you kinda ... need to know the basics of the art form to fully appreciate it.

When it comes to the dancing, don't go in expecting flashy, high-energy idol routines. It looks amazing, but i found the dancing itself to be pretty...unimpressive. The moves are super slow and minimal, which is the exact opposite of what usually draws me to dancing in general. The animation is absolutely gorgeous, but watching the performances just left me confused and bored, kind of like when I watched ankoku butoh for the first time.

Story-wise, it takes itself really seriously, even with the cute art style. It gives off The Elusive Samurai vibes, just way less gory. Some moments honestly got me saying "woah... that's heavy". There are a lot funny bits here and there, but they're mostly just there to give you a quick breather from all the tension, not to actually act as a comedy.

Luckily, the story completely holds up on its own. Since the dancing didn't really do it for me, the plot, the character dynamics, and the insane visuals were more than enough to keep me hooked. The art is just that good. Cygames definitely knows how to flex their animation skills, and they were clearly going for a top-tier production here.

Plus, Oniyasha and his crew look... pleasent to see, to say the least and honestly that could be another reason for you to check it out, everyone like a visually appealing characters afterall.

Overall, I'm kinda torn on whether to recommend this to everyone. If you want something fast paced or easy to watch, you'll probably just find it slow and alienating. But if you're into slow-burn, artsy stuff or really love traditional Japanese culture, you'll probably get a lot out of it. Even though the main focus on choreography never really clicked with me, the awesome story and top tier visuals made it a really great watch anyway.

This series peaked in the 1st 2 chapters and went downhill from there, from being a historical dancing anime the animation (past chapter 2) is not really notable, also im not learning anything about Japanese traditional dance (maybe as it is Japanese it is expected to be general knowledge there(?)
The main character is not really likeable and not especially unlikeable, it feels likeis just there to take the most insifrible route so the story can keep going
There's really no goal, and he gets the biggest reward for a dancer in that era in like chapter 5
Really something that past it's season will be forgotten
